Join us for a day of lectures, readings, and activities dedicated to the history and present of women, writing and the suffrage movement.
A keynote lecture from Professor Rosemary Ashton will trace the part played by the founders of Bedford College for Women in the politics of the suffrage movement. Throughout the day there will be readings and papers from outstanding innovative writers and critics, including Andrea Brady, Georgina Colby, Sarah Hayden, David Herd, Drew Milne, Nisha Ramayya and Isabel Waidner. These writers and critics will be reading and reflectingon the politics and arts of women and suffrage before and after The Representation of the People's Act in 1918 and its relationship to the politics of suffrage in the contemporary. Redell Olsen will be screening a new short film especially made for the event. In the evening there will be a keynote reading by the writer Deborah Levy who will read from her forthcoming book 'The Cost of Living'.
Current students from Royal Holloway will be on-hand throughout the day to discuss the research projects they have conducted to mark the centenary of women's suffrage and to share their creative responses to the movement. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in creating banners reflecting what suffrage means to them in 2018. The day will culminate in a communal march around Bedford Square as we raise our banners in solidarity with the hundreds of thousands of activists who campaigned in the suffrage movement.
