Located within the broader politics of gender, caste and nation, this talk maps out the alternative dance movement, triggered by Rabindranath Tagore. Critiquing the ideological construction of the nation, it formulates Tagore's politics of performance at a historic political moment of cultural nationalism.


Dr Aishika Chakraborty is Associate Professor at the School of Women's Studies, Jadavpur University, India. Following the completion of her doctoral thesis on widowhood in colonial Bengal, the focus of Aishika's current research is the journey of contemporary dance in Bengal, underscoring its history, legacy and politics of gender. Her co-edited book, Moving Space: Women in Performance, is forthcoming in 2017, while she edited and introduced a volume titled Ranjabati, A Dancer and Her World in 2008.
