Student counselling

During your time at Royal Holloway you may find yourself in an emotionally challenging situation that is unfamiliar to you.

Emotional problems can get in the way of academic pursuits, not to mention life in general. You may find that you would rather not talk to family, friends or your department – and that’s where the Counselling Service is able to offer you some support. They offer:

  • Relaxation sessions because sometimes, when university work and life get on top of us, we simply need to remember how to feel calmer and chill out.
  • Workshops covering areas such as anxiety, assertiveness and stress management
  • Individual counselling sessions where you can explore a specific issue, discuss what you may want to do differently, and find out what your next steps may be.

The most common problems come under the categories of loneliness, depression, anxiety, panic, sexuality, eating disorders, bereavement, childhood sexual abuse, post-traumatic stress, assault, rape, dependency on alcohol or drugs, as well as many others. In addition, the counsellors can help with academic-related problems such as exam phobia, fear of speaking to a group and inability to concentrate.

If you can't make it to a counselling session, perhaps because you're away on a placement or studying overseas for a year, the counselling service are still able to help through email counselling.

The Student Counselling Service organise coffee mornings during Freshers’ Week – a great opportunity to meet new friends and share tips on surviving Freshers' Week, to find out more about the support services on offer, and to get a free coffee!
