Royal Holloway Sport have just partnered with HydraChill Water Refilling Stations, to provide a practical refilling alternative to disposable bottled water and the demands placed on energy, resources and landfill.
Previously Royal Holloway Sport sold in excess of 4,000 plastic bottled water per year. The aim is to significantly reduce our waste whilst improving the experience to all users.
HydraChill has been specially developed and manufactured in the UK in association with the UK Water Industry under the Water for Health initiative. Designed to improve and better showcase access to chilled, filtered mains-fed water.
Its development has been guided and supervised by the water industry to incorporate WRAS certification and meet industry standards at all points of preparation, installation and commissioning.
The customised HydraChill filling stations have been commissioned at the main Sports Centre reception area and inside the centre's fitness suite, which can have up to 2,000 visitors per day.
“HydraChill has been on our radar for the past two or three years” said Head of Active Lifestyles & Sport, Mark Hyndman. “We have viewed their progress at other universities with genuine interest and received excellent references. With extended outdoor facilities online, we felt the time now right to improve the quality of our hydration service to members and guests”.
The machines will offer users free chilled and filtered water, refillable to all bottles. For users without a container, a Royal Holloway Sports reusable bottle can be purchased from the machine for £2. “Revenue from bottle sales will obviously help fund the free water provision and machine upkeep”, added Hyndman.
“It’s great that Royal Holloway have shown such confidence in HydraChill with a two-machine purchase.” said HydraChill’s Founding Director Nick Davis. “It helped that at almost every university where we have supplied first units, others have followed. In every instance they are selling more sports bottles from our machine than before. Yet because our machines fill all containers free, bottle litter has virtually been eliminated”
HydraChill has recently won a highly respected Green Apple Environment Award in an international campaign to find the greenest companies, communities and best practices, to be presented at The Houses of Parliament in November. “This certainly added to the appeal to HydraChill’s unique service and it was not simply another vending option.” said Hyndman “We’re really satisfied and inspired about the health and environmental impact with plastic bottle waste almost been eliminated from the Sports Centre. I’m sure other departments within the University will monitor the benefits of our machines with equal interest”.
