With regard to the latter he had a commitment for many years to work in a local authority that arose from returning to social work practice and involved working with practitioners and managers on 30+ projects.

He has authored ten books including: The Social Work Business, Routledge 2003; Working with Older People (with Denise Tanner), Routledge 2007; Modernising Social Work: Critical Considerations (co-edited with Vicky White) Policy Press 2009; and The Oxford Dictionary of Social Work and Social Care (with Vicky White), Oxford University Press 2013.
