John Harris worked in a Social Services department for 14 years as a social worker, training officer and district manager before moving into higher education. His main interests are citizenship, the impact of neo-liberalism on social work (including markets, managerialism and consumerism) and action research/practice development.
With regard to the latter he had a commitment for many years to work in a local authority that arose from returning to social work practice and involved working with practitioners and managers on 30+ projects.
He has authored ten books including: The Social Work Business, Routledge 2003; Working with Older People (with Denise Tanner), Routledge 2007; Modernising Social Work: Critical Considerations (co-edited with Vicky White) Policy Press 2009; and The Oxford Dictionary of Social Work and Social Care (with Vicky White), Oxford University Press 2013.
He is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Warwick.
