Repeated assessments in natural environments- How to use them in mental health research?
Abstract: Experience sampling method (ESM) is a way to measure one’s behaviour, feelings and actions in their natural environment, especially when interested in how these unfold dynamically in the real world. In the first part of this talk, I will present the ‘what’ and ‘why’ of ESM, summarising the potential uses of ESM in research. I will then explain key issues for consideration in designing ESM protocols and describe the challenges and practical issues in data processing and analyses using different approaches. The second part of the talk will be more applied, where I will focus on data visualisation and reporting of ESM data using a clinical sample of ADHD and borderline personality disorder patients.
