Bach Snapshots: Call for music creators

Bach Snapshots: Call for music creators

Join us for this special, virtual collaboration between new and returning music students at the Department of Music at Royal Holloway, as we kickstart the academic year with our digital response to Beethoven's Piano Concertos.

As part of this unique project, we are also looking for a team of music creators to create 2-3 minute musical 'snapshots' using the pre-recorded material from a whole host of solo works by J. S. Bach. These excerpts will be recorded remotely by current members of Orchestras at Royal Holloway.

For this opportunity, we are looking for any music creative, composer, sound artist, producer, or any student with an interest in creating music to sign-up and collaborate with our toolkit of wonderful sounds.

These new 'snapshots' will be curated into a thread of works that will be given a world premiere as part of the International Concert Series 2020-21.

Further information

  • Selected music creators will create a work of 2-3-minutes’ duration that will be released through a digital world premiere in spring/summer 2021, as part of the International Concert Series 2020-21.

  • Each music creator will be allocated a previously selected catalogue of recorded musical excerpts to base their new work on and incorporate.
  • The new work must utilise the catalogue of musical excerpts from one or more of the J. S. Bach works but can also include samples, recorded sound, existing performance elements in the creator's catalogue, found sound, etc.

  • Submissions from composers/sound creators of any genre are welcomed.

  • Submissions from the broadest range of artists are encouraged – we want to ensure that this opportunity is accessible to all. We welcome applications through alternative methods (e.g. video applications). Please email Eleanor.Freedman@rhul.ac.uk if you would like to submit an application through alternative means.

  • Artists do not necessarily need prior skills in using a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), as a one-hour introductory session will introduce music creators to a free DAW before the creative process begins. However, if not comfortable with DAW work, or in the case of artists who work with a personal assistant, that assistant must be able to work with a DAW. Many DAWs are suitable, including ProTools, Cubase, Audacity, Reaper, Ableton Live, and Logic. Many of these DAWs are free to use, download or use through free trials. For further advice or information, please contact Tom.Parkinson@rhul.ac.uk.

  • If your primary means of music creation is not through DAW, you may apply as a co-creator with an individual who is adept as using DAWs.
