Our alumni are making waves in the creative industries

Media Arts alumni have grabbed opportunities to progress since graduating, achieving great success soon after leaving Royal Holloway.

Name: Susannah Chandler
Subject: Media Arts
Graduated: 2009
Place of work: Premier
Position: Producer

Susannah works in production for commercials, events and filming at Premier, a creative communications agency that works with the entertainment, arts and culture industries.

What first attracted you to Royal Holloway?

I did A-Level Media Studies and had always found I could immerse myself in the subject. Royal Holloway was the only choice I made to study Media Arts.

I knew it had a great reputation for the course and the even split of practical and theory was the key reason I chose to study there.

What did Royal Holloway teach you?

Not only did I have some great lecturers, but I enjoyed the variety of the lectures themselves. There was plenty of practical work and a variety of avenues to take, from directing and producing, to camerawork and editing.

I chose to specialise in Creative Sound Design and that is where I developed my passion for the industry, both in production and post-production.

Royal Holloway has taught me to work hard, but to also make time to enjoy life. For me, it’s all about a balance, that is something that’s become very important to me.

What’s happened in your career?

I started working in London two months after graduating as a runner in a post-production house in Soho. I then joined the Bookings Department, working as a co-ordinator, and learning the ropes from the post production managers.

In February 2012 I was promoted to Post-production manager. I moved companies six months after this to Premier, where I am now working as a producer. I love the fact that I’m constantly learning new things and meeting new people.

Name: Luke Taylor and Gav Rowe
Subject: BA Media Arts
Graduated: 1999
Place of work: Bigballs Films
Position: Founders and Directors

Gav and Luke founded BAFTA nominated Bigballs Films in 2005 and since then the company has gone from strength to strength.

Bigballs have created, distributed and monetised pioneering social entertainment, alongside delivering groundbreaking and award-winning advertising campaigns with some of the world’s most forward-thinking agencies and brands.

What first attracted you to Royal Holloway?

Gav: The course offered lots of different options so I was able to utilise my art and design background. If you had passion for film and wanted to be artistic in some way this was the place to be.

Luke: The course was half academic and half creative and that was exactly what I was looking for.

What did Royal Holloway teach you?

Gav: Listening and being willing to share your ideas was essential. It prepared you to go and work in an environment where you get paid for your creativity.

Luke: There were some great personalities in the department and people who helped us loads. I feel blessed because of the people we got to work with while we were at the College.

What’s happened in your career?

Luke: At 21 years old we were the youngest signed directors in London with Bullet Films, where we were producing music videos.

In 2005 we set up Bigballs Films making TV shows, running YouTube channels, and working with ad agencies.

It is empowering, special and unique. I enjoy being in the position where you are the controller and you are able to constantly build on what you do.

Gav: Bigballs is interesting because of the combination of all the work it does. With the birth of YouTube we wanted to get involved in content creation not just music videos and we’ve worked with some incredible people.
