83% Media Arts research is world leading or internationally excellent
In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, the biggest periodic research assessment exercise in the world, 83% of the department’s research has been judged to be world-leading (4*) and internationally excellent (3*) in terms of originality, significance and rigour.
The REF 2014 has clearly reaffirmed the department’s position as one of the top media departments in the country, based on all assessment parameters:
- 45% of our research has been classified as world-leading (4*).
- Media Arts increased its GPA (grade point average) from 2.9 in the RAE 2008 to 3.27.
100% of our research impact was graded 4* and 3*. This means that both our traditional scholarly and practice-based research is generating ‘outstanding’ and ‘very considerable’ impacts, thereby benefiting the media industry, film and television archives, policy makers as well as cultural and public life in general.
REF 2014 has also confirmed the strength of our research environment, 70 per cent of which was classified as 4* and 30 per cent as 3*. This reflects our success in winning competitive research funding, developing and consolidating collaborative and individual research projects, supervising PhD students and creating a vibrant research culture that is conducive to producing research of world-leading and internationally excellent quality.
