Modern Languages

Studying a language at Royal Holloway will give you an advantage for life. Graduates with language skills are highly sought after, with a lack of language skills estimated to cost the UK 3.5 per cent of GDP.

Whether you are continuing your language study from A-Level (or equivalent) or starting as a completely beginner, we aim to equip our students with practical language skills that will enhance your employability, and with cultural awareness, confidence and flexibility. Wheter you choose to one, two or even three languages, or to make your language study part of a Joint Honours degree with another subject, we have a range of exciting options in Modern Languages!

At Royal Holloway we pride ourselves on our world-class teaching and research, our welcoming and friendly atmosphere and our wide range of degree programmes.

Our students and degree programmes

Our students come from around the world to develop critical and communication skills, cross-cultural understanding and foreign-language proficiency. They explore not only the language but also the culture and history of France and Francophone countries, Germany and Austria, Italy, Latin America and Spain.

Our programmes are taught by leading experts in their fields who share their knowledge in an approachable way to help you get the most out of your degree.

What do you get from our degrees?

A degree in Modern Languages will set you apart from other graduates, because our graduates all develop excellent communication, analytical and research skills and often achieve native or near-native spoken and written fluency in one or more major foreign language.

This is alongside cross-cultural awareness and understanding, which helps equip you with the skills needed to be a high-flyer in an increasingly globalised world.

Many of our degrees also allow you to take advantage of one of the most exciting and worthwhile opportunities on offer to students – a year abroad – which is invaluable in developing the kind of intellectual maturity and cultural sensitivity that is highly prized in the workplace.

We very much look forward to welcoming you into the thriving and friendly community that is the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures.
