Lost civilizations, discovered worlds. Among our great fascinations have long been the stories of the people, cultures and artifacts lying buried and unknown until unearthed by archaeologists.

Join us as we continue this incredibly popular new class in collaboration with Reaktion Books, distinguished UK publisher of the acclaimed series Lost Civilizations. We’ll explore the great civilizations of the ancient world, looking at their vanished cultures, art and history, and the modern methods that have enabled their rescue from oblivion. Students will come away with new insights into these lost worlds and their relevance to us today from the renowned scholars and experts who wrote the books dedicated to each topic.

The Goths are truly a “lost civilization.” Sweeping down from the north, ancient Gothic tribes sacked the imperial city of Rome and set in motion the decline and fall of the western Roman empire. Ostrogothic and Visigothic kings ruled over Italy and Spain, dominating early medieval Europe. Yet after the last Gothic kingdom fell more than a thousand years ago, the Goths disappeared as an independent people — and in the centuries that followed, came to be remembered as both barbaric destroyers and heroic champions of liberty. Professor David M. Gwynn brings together the interwoven stories of the original Goths and the diverse Gothic heritage — one that continues to shape our modern world — in this fascinating and thoroughly engaging lecture. Students of history, architecture and literature alike will come away with an enhanced knowledge of this great lost civilization.
