Department of Geography PhD Studentships
The Department of Geography is pleased to invite applications for two PhD studentships funded by Royal Holloway, University of London.
Each studentship offers:
- an annual maintenance stipend of £17,285;
- a fee waiver for UK/EU applicants;
- £750 annually for research expenses.
The deadline for applications is 12 noon on 8 May 2020.
Applicants are ordinarily expected to hold a UK 1st- or upper 2nd-class undergraduate degree (or a recognised international equivalent) together with a relevant Master’s degree (at Pass level or higher). Professional experience, particularly in the case of applicants wishing to pursue a practice-based PhD, will be considered in the absence of a Master’s degree. Applicants must be from the UK/EU. Overseas applicants (where they have industry or overseas government sponsorship for their full stipend) are instead invited to discuss the possibility of applying for an Overseas Excellence Fee Studentship (please email Dr Innes M. Keighren, PGR Lead).
Applicants are invited to contact a relevant member of staff to discuss their project and supervisory possibilities. Once a member of staff has, on the basis of an interview or other formal discussion, agreed to supervise a project, the applicant should (with the supervisor’s guidance) prepare a formal research proposal. Guidance on this process is available from Dr Innes M. Keighren, PGR Lead.
Having agreed a supervisor and finalised their research proposal, candidates should then submit an online application, via Royal Holloway Direct, to join the PhD programme. Applicants should nominate at least one referee and provide the following documents as part of their application:
- a CV;
- copies of all degree transcripts and/or certificates;
- the final research proposal.
The application (including the submission of the referee’s letter of recommendation) should be complete by the 12 noon deadline on 8 May 2020.
A departmental committee will consider the applications submitted to it, taking into account the quality of the candidate and the quality and feasibility of the project proposal. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application no later than 29 May 2020.
