Rishan Patel (BEng Electronic Engineering 2018-2021)

I think it’s safe to say, without my time at RHUL, I would not have developed into the person I am today. I know that’s something people always say but I mean it very literally; without the module Fundamentals of Biomedical Engineering and my final year project (both taught/supervised by Dr Clive Cheong and Dr Steve Alty), I don’t believe I would’ve found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and that truly shows the immeasurable impact of this experience.
I often reflect on how lucky I am, to have been a part of the EE department at RHUL and how it has shaped my life since. The EE department academically has taught me several useful skills that I have used consistently since to personal skills like accountability and discipline. I have managed to meet some great people and make life-long connections not only with students but the staff from the technicians to lecturers. It has always felt as though they were genuinely passionate about our success and gave those students who wanted more out of the degree, the chance to succeed. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone interested in EE or general engineering as these skills learnt are so transferrable to many different fields.
After graduating my degree, I went on to study Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College and currently I am a PhD student at UCL developing Brain Computer Interfaces.

George Reid (BEng Electronic Engineering 2017-2020)

As a member of the first Electronic Engineering Cohort at Royal Holloway, I have witnessed the diligence, commitment, and passion that this department provides for its students.

The Professors and Technicians have created a nurturing and friendly environment which allowed me to excel in my studies whether it was problem solving or thinking creatively. Furthermore, there was specific emphasis on equipping all students with industry skills through extensive team projects, presentations and live demonstrations helping prepare us for life after University. As a student representative I was actively encouraged to bring forward concerns and improvements from my fellow peers, and the department’s willingness to act is not a-like any other.

Natasha Abdul (BEng Electronic Engineering 2017-2020)

Lecturers are extremely helpful including the technicians even if help is needed outside of lectures and labs.

The course challenges you to excel in all aspects of electronic engineering including software and hardware. The facilities in the department are exceptional and there is never a shortage of equipment. They care about each individual student and how they are doing within the course.

A degree in electronic engineering at Royal Holloway has equipped me to pursue almost any technical career that I want.

Jeremy Chee (BEng Electronic Engineering 2017-2020)

I joined the Bsc Electronic Engineering course at Royal Holloway University in September 2017.

Royal Holloway University has given me the opportunity to continue my education in a well-rounded and cultured environment. Not only the BEng Electronic Engineering course has provided me intimate knowledge and technical skills regarding on electronics hardware, but also provided me a strong fundamental on my software and programming skills.

I have greatly benefited from my erudite Professors whose guidance encouraged me to be au courant in my field. Their focus on research and motivation toward learning additional skills had allowed me to improve myself in all terms, which made me within the top 5 employee (as a Software Engineer) at Gaventure Studio, which is a client and quality focused digital agency from Australia.

Vlad Tudose (BEng Electronic Engineering 2017-2020)

The scientific, technologic, and product-oriented subjects I studied at school and college had set me up nicely for my degree. It felt like I was getting glimpses of what I wanted to do, which was interesting, but I always knew there were deeper things to dive into. Since not many colleges offered it, I was looking forward to specialising in electronics at university and getting closer to the industry by learning this subject at a more advanced level. However, the Electronic Engineering course at Royal Holloway exceeded my expectations in that it offered much more, and even though I was among the students in the very first cohort. No two electronics courses will be the same, of course, each having their own unique flavours, but this course was peppered with versatility and prioritised creativity. I mean the skills I learnt and got to practice were super valuable, even in modules that were not of my immediate interests, let alone those that did align with my main passion – Audio.

I now find myself applying my skills exactly in this industry, as Audio Project Engineer in a consumer electronics company. This makes me feel very satisfied with my degree, and I can also see how friends were able to make the most of it. I think everyone walked away with valuable things after studying Electronic Engineering at Royal Holloway.

Liibaan Mohammed (BEng Electronic Engineering 2017-2020)

I always loved building and upgrading my PC from an early age, this led me to take on a bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering. Royal Holloway offered a diverse course range with a mixture of electronics, physics, telecommunications, software, design, and project management, this is what drew me to study at the university. The lectures were very organised and structured where lecturers would make sure that every student understands what is being taught. Lecturers were easily contactable during their office hours and were really supportive with any queries I had. Every term I got to work on a group project which enabled me to enhance a variety of skills and abilities that are beneficial in both life and work, including teamwork, leadership, time management, and presenting skills. Studying Electronic Engineering at Royal Holloway generally gave me the skills and confidence I need to go into the technology field and to study further. The staff work very hard to see everyone succeed, and I would highly recommend studying electronic engineering at Royal Holloway to anyone who wants to have a career in tech.

Fadi El Nel (BEng Electronic Engineering 2017-2020)

I obtained my bachelor’s degree (BEng) in Electronics Engineering from the Electronics Engineering department at Royal Holloway, University of London in 2020. Thereafter, I received an offer to study an MSc in Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London. After, having completed a total study time of four years in the UK, I immediately moved back to Sweden to start my professional journey as a Hardware Engineer at the headquarters of Volvo Cars.

My experience of the program has been very positive from the very start to the very end. The first year comprised of a very learn full introduction to the electronics world including embedded systems, microcontrollers, analogue communication, renewable energy systems and C++ programming. The second and third year were very much applied mathematics and physics to real-life electrical and electronics problems including building our very own record players as well as autonomous self-driving myRIO vehicles. During my study time, the staff has been exceptional with supporting and teaching, even under multiple occasions staying until late evenings to engage with the students.

I consider myself very lucky to have enrolled into this program, I got the chance to meet a few of most knowledgeable professors and lecturers in this field but also very motivated students. Thanks to the staff and level of difficulty, I was able to graduate on top of my postgraduate cohort at Imperial College London.  Joining the course has opened many doors and opportunities, not to mention an exceptional offer from Volvo – world’s safest car manufacturer.
