'Race', Racism, and Diversity: in the Roman world and Today (CRGR)

  • Date27 May 2022

A roundtable discussion on 'race', racism, and diversity in the Roman world and what this means for us today.

The Centre of the Reception for Greece and Rome (CPGR), with special thanks to Sam Agbamu, Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in Classics, is delighted to announce a roundtable discussion (8th June 15:00) on 'race', racism, and diversity in the Roman world and what this means for us today.

Recent years have seen an increased focus on 'race' and racism in the ancient Greek and Roman worlds, with new methodological approaches shedding new light on such areas of research. In conjunction with such work, researchers, teachers, and students of the Greek and Roman worlds have grappled with the duties and responsibilities of engaging with and promoting a discipline with a long history of complicity in racist structures.

This roundtable brings together researchers whose work relates to the theme of 'race' and racism in the Roman world. Nandini Pandey (Johns Hopkins University), Lylaah Bhalerao (New York University), Bet Hucks (Universität Heidelberg), and Sam Agbamu (Royal Holloway, University of London) will share some of their recent work on this theme and discuss what it means to be teaching and studying 'race' and racism in the Roman world, in schools and universities today.

This event has been organised with the support of the Royal Holloway Department of Classics and will be held on Microsoft Teams.
