Research fellowships: Attracting the brightest early career researchers

We're keen to support strong candidates in applying for Research fellowships. We're interested in attracting applicants with a strong track record with interests that match our research profile.

Why choose the Department of Psychology at Royal Holloway?

The Research Excellence Framework 2014 (REF) classified 93 per cent of our research as world leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) in terms of originality, significance and rigour. This places the department in sixth place among UK universities (Unit of Assessment: Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience). The panel commended our submission for the high proportion of early career researchers included, and for our Athena SWAN Silver award in recognition of our support for equality and diversity.

Our commitment

We have a successful track record in mentoring and supporting young researchers and fellows. We aim to continue supporting excellent young researchers and can tailor our support to fit with the requirements of each funding scheme (for example we may be able to offer support to fund MRI projects) and your career needs and aspirations (e.g. you may require development of specific skills).

Available research facilities

  • Research-dedicated3 Tesla MR scanner (Siemens TIM Trio)

  • MRI compatible tDCS

  • TMS & Neuronavigation

  • EEG Biosemi Active Two System

  • Several Eye-trackers (incl. MRI-compatible)

  • EMG, GSR, EKG (AD Instruments)

  • Sleep Lab

  • MRI compatible Tactile Stimulators

Timescales

To allow time both for preparation and proper costing of the proposal, the process of submission must start at least 20 working days before the deadline. All Fellowship proposals will be subject to a critical review by members of academic staff and the Research Committee as part of the submission process.

How to apply?

The best initial approach is to contact the Director of Research, Professor Manos Tsakiris (manos.tsakiris@royalholloway.ac.uk).

Deadlines

Each Fellowship has a different deadline, and these dates will be published on the relevant websites – see links below.

Pay scales

You will need to agree your pay scale with the department that depends on factors such as age, experience etc. The lowest grade a Fellow can be costed at is Grade 7, Point 31 and it is normal that there is an additional spine point for every year of postdoctoral experience you have. So for a Fellow with one year of postdoctoral experience at the beginning of the Fellowship it will be grade 7, point 31. Royal Holloway pay scales can be found at our HR site.
