Dr Catherine Sebastian, a Lecturer in the department, has been awarded a Future Research Leaders grant from the Economic and Social Research Council for a project entitled ‘Characterising Emotion Regulation Development in Adolescence’. The award will fund a three-year project based in schools looking at how young people aged 11-16 develop the ability to control their emotions and how this relates to mental health and wellbeing. Adolescents will complete several computerised measures in the first year of the project, and will then be followed up longitudinally one year later. It is hoped that the research will help us to understand why symptoms such as depression, anxiety and aggressive behaviour often emerge during adolescence, and how we might prevent this happening. Dr Sebastian is currently looking for schools to participate, so if you represent a school or would like more information about the study, please contact her at catherine.sebastian@rhul.ac.uk
