A Royal Holloway undergraduate was among five finalists to have their business plan shortlisted for the Santander Universities Entrepreneurship awards recognising the most talented university students.
Politics and International Relations student Joe Shellard impressed judges with his online ticket sales and distribution system, AdelphiTickets.com. The site currently operates in UK and Australia and is aimed at supporting theatres and schools in promoting and selling tickets for upcoming shows.
The winning business plans were announced at London’s Royal Opera House on Wednesday (4 July). Whilst Joe missed out on a share of the prize money, he was commended for his business plan.
Stephen Brooks, Santander’s Head of Public Sector and Charities says:
“At Santander we have been particularly impressed by the quality of this year’s entries. It has been very difficult to choose just 10 plans among all the projects submitted. However, it has also been encouraging to see the creativity, inventiveness and commercial acumen displayed by all participants. Entrepreneurial skills are much needed in the current economic environment and these students offer a great deal of hope for the future of the UK economy.”
Joe Shellard set about making a system which uses state-of-the-art technology to process tickets; whether buying in person, by telephone or online in 2011. The result is beautifully simple and straightforward, making ADELPHI accessible to everyone.
Joe commented; "I wanted to build the best, to see what it would look like if we made it incredibly easy to book tickets, effortless to send beautiful email promotions to customers and straightforward to see sales patterns emerging. After six months of hard work, we did just that."
The awards, funded by Santander Universities Global Division, are aimed at supporting and encouraging university students to pursue their business ideas.
