Degree Course Pathways


We run ten different undergraduate degree programmes in physics, each with varying course options and paths. We run a further four with joint honours in Mathematics, Music or Philosophy, all with varying course options and paths.Take a look at our flowcharts to find out what you can study on each of our degree programmes.

Physics (MSci or BSc)

This is our most popular and flexible course, which gives you a thorough grounding in the basic concepts and theories of modern and classical physics to a level close to contemporary research.  

You’ll develop your mathematical ability and communication, computing and experimental skills as well as getting the chance to create a portfolio of your research. You can study this degree as a three-year BSc or four-year MSci with the latter going into greater depth than the former.

The MSci is usually the degree of choice for those planning to use their Physics degree in a professional capacity, either in science-based employment or through further study at PhD level. The fourth year of the MSci degrees, while based at Royal Holloway, also offers a wide variety of 4th year intercollegiate options that may be taken at other University of London Departments of Physics.

Astrophysics (MSci or BSc)

This course allows for the full development of core physics concepts with a strong emphasis on phenomena encountered in astrophysics and cosmology. The MSci broadens your knowledge and skill set more than the BSc but both give you the opportunity to enhance your experimental and observational skills through an astronomy-based individual research project in your final year.

Experimental Physics (MSci or BSc)

If you choose this course, you’ll focus on the development and techniques of physics from a more practical point of view. 

This course covers all of the core skills and concepts of the Physics degrees but also provides an additional focus on the experimental techniques and methods through which modern physics is driven.

You can take this course as a three-year BSc or four-year MSci, with the final fourth year being taught at intercollegiate level.

Physics with Particle Physics (MSci or BSc)

This degree gives you the opportunity to study Physics with a special emphasis on the underlying physics of fundamental particles, high-energy particle detectors and accelerator physics. Both the three-year BSc and four-year MSci include a field trip to CERN.

Theoretical Physics (MSci or BSc)

If you study Theoretical Physics you’ll cover all the core skills and concepts of the Physics degree and gain an enhanced mathematical and deeper conceptual understanding of modern and classical physics. 

There is a reduced laboratory component in later years of the course, compared to the Physics degree, with greater emphasis being placed on advanced theoretical topics such as Non-Linear and Chaotic Systems. This course can be studied as a BSc or MSci.

Joint honours

Mathematics and Physics (MSci or BSc)

Studying Physics incorporates mathematics but this joint honours degree enables you to study maths from a purer and more rigorous point of view and to a deeper level than a Physics degree alone. 

You’ll split your time equally between the Physics and Maths departments but some of the laboratory study components are reduced to make room for the strongly complementary maths modules.

Physics with Music (BSc)

This course covers all of the mathematical, conceptual and experimental skills expected of a graduate physicist as well as the non-physics component Music, which comprises 25 per cent of what you learn across three years. 

The Music component covers music composition, theory and analysis and historical musicology, while your final year project helps you appreciate and understand the role of music within physics even further.

Physics with Philosophy (BSc)

This is similar to Physics with Music in that the core skills expected of a graduate physicist are covered while the philosophy element equals 25 per cent of your studies across your three-year degree. 

The philosophy component of this course comprises the study of a broad range of texts varying from ancient Greek to modern philosophy, while tackling fundamental questions. This programme gives you additional philosophical, interpretative and critical skills.
