The Department of Physics at Royal Holloway, University of London and The National Physical Laboratory have signed a joint partnership agreement to work together in areas of mutual scientific interest and create a centre of excellence in nanophysics and quantum metrology.

Professor Paul Layzell, Principal of Royal Holloway and Dr Brian Bowsher, Managing Director of  NPL, celebrated the signing of the agreement, a Memorandum of Understanding, on Monday (19 September) at the College.

The agreement brings great benefits for Physics students at the College, including opportunities for work experience and summer internship placements at NPL, being taught by NPL scientists at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and undertaking final year projects with them, as well as an ongoing programme of joint PhD studentships.

Professor Layzell said: “This Memorandum of Understanding has real substance behind it; from staff working on joint research projects to the great opportunities our students will have working at NPL. This is a really exciting opportunity for us to share our expertise and bring world-class science together.”

The collaboration will also create the appointment of joint research staff, the strategic planning of joint research projects and will provide students and staff with access to facilities at NPL as well as opening up our for NPL staff.

Dr Bowsher added: “Collaboration has always been important to NPL and we are delighted to cement our relationship with Royal Holloway through this Memorandum of Understanding, which we hope will both deepen our physics interaction and provide the opportunity to broaden into new areas of collaboration.”

Vishal Panchal, a Royal Holloway graduate who completed a summer placement at NPL and is a current joint PhD student, said: “Staff at Royal Holloway provide high levels of teaching and have good contacts at other institutes. For me this has meant I have been able to gain valuable experience working with scientists at NPL as well as researchers at the College.”

The partnership also focuses on developing new and existing collaborations mostly in the fields of nanophysics and quantum metrology as well as the future training of metrologists in the UK.

Dr Phil Meeson, Deputy Dean of the Science Faculty and a member of the nanophysics research group at Royal Holloway said: “New arrangements between NPL and Royal Holloway are providing a fantastic environment in which both organisations can develop and prosper at the cutting edge of science.

There is huge potential for the development of our world-class facilities to encompass new areas of quantum and metrology research by expanding capabilities and projects at both sites."
