RupertMellor

Rupert Mellor

For his 2012 SEPnet Summer Placement, Rupert spent eight weeks  at the University of Sussex building a frequency doubling system  for use in ionising atoms in ion traps.

NgHoibwback

Gary Ng

Gary spent eight weeks during summer 2012 at Online Lubricants Ltd in Barking, Essex.  His internship project title was Customer Profiling, but in reality, he was given various tasks, as well as the main project, to handle and complete simultaneously within the busy business environment.

HarrietvanderVlietimage

Harriet van der Vliet

Harriet spent her eight week summer placement at NPL in 2012 working on graphene and the development of new quantum electrical standards.

NathalieSlim

Nathalie Slim

Nathalie spent eight weeks of Summer 2011 helping to modify a resonator circuit at NPL.

KirkRussellbwback

Russell Kirk

Russell's second SEPnet internship was completed at Feedback Instruments Ltd in Summer 2011.  This provided Russell with the very useful experience of working in industry.

JonathanLangleben

Jonathan Langleben

Jonathan, currently a 3rd year student at Sussex University, enjoyed an eight week SEPnet placement at Royal Holloway during Summer 2011.   His project involved the design of a microwave.

AndreHector

Andre Hector

Andre spent six weeks during summer 2011 on an internal internship which involved growing crystals of various compositions and conducting experiments on calcium doped sodium cobaltate crystals.

Patrick

Patrick Mayrhofer

A 4th year physicist studying at  the Technical University in Graz, Austria. He worked on two seperate projects as part of his summer internship in 2010, which included both computational physics as well as more applied work in the laboratory simulating microwave cavities and using labview to control motors in a detector system.

Francesca

Francesca Foronda

Francesca did a six week placement in the department in between her 2nd and 3rd years of study in 2010. Working with the condensed matter group, she liaised with research staff and PhD students on a project to grow sodium cobaltate crystals using a floating zone furnace and investigate their structure through x-ray diffraction.

Interns in 2010

David Voneshan

VoneshanDavidbwback

David, a 4th year physicist at Royal Holloway, spent nine weeks in summer 2010 at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France, working with Dr P.P. Deen on a stoichiometric study of the laves phase compound ZrMn2. He was involved in all stages of the project, including fabrication, x-ray diffraction and polarised neutron diffraction.

Russell Kirk

KirkRussellbwbackRussell was at Queen Mary, University of London for eight weeks in summer 2010 to help with their spectroscopic research into metal tris-hydroxyquinolates. His work included the use of advanced equipment such as luminescence equipment, which involved a laser, a cryostat and liquid nitrogen.
