Latex

Introduction

Latex is a typesetting package with is excellent at producing very high quality (book quality) publication output. Latex is not a WYSISYG editor, you do not edit the document as it would look like in print. The layout is mainly done by latex for you and you only have to put in the content (text, equations, images, tables etc). Some of the excellent features are

  • Very high quality equations
  • Easy referencing of equations, figures, tables, etc
  • Bibliography
  • Tables of contents, figures, etc

Complete  latex environment is MiKTeX and a front end for this is TexNicCenter. It is possible for you to download both and install on your personal laptop or desktop.

Getting started

Both MikTeX and TexNicCenter are installed on the University computers. They can be found under

Start -> Programs -> Academic Applications -> Mathematics -> TeXnicCenter

Starting TeXnicCenter starts a program which looks like this

TeXnicCenter

Everything is typed in normal text into the editor window. Here is a template of a very simple latex file to get you started.
