John Sellars

John Sellars

I have wide interests in the history of philosophy and have published on ancient, renaissance, and early modern philosophy. In particular I have worked on ancient Stoicism and its later reception. I am especially interested in metaphilosophy and the notion of philosophy as a way of life, as it is expressed by philosophers from Socrates to Foucault.

Before joining Royal Holloway I was a Research Fellow at King’s College London, working on the Ancient Commentators on Aristotle project, and before that a Lecturer at Birkbeck, University of London. Earlier still, I was a Junior Research Fellow at Wolfson College, Oxford, and I remain a member of Wolfson.

Selected Publications:

  • Hellenistic Philosophy (Oxford University Press, 2018)
  • (ed.) The Routledge Handbook of the Stoic Tradition (Routledge, 2016)
  • Stoicism (Acumen, 2006; Routledge, 2014)
  • The Art of Living (Ashgate, 2003; Duckworth, 2009; Bloomsbury, 2013)
