We are pleased to announce this important new addition to our portfolio of degree programmes.
Our world is one of increasingly serious disagreements about which aims and values should inform human life, and the need to philosophically reflect on how we study and actively engage with all areas of human culture has never been greater.
But why study philosophy at university when it can be a very specialised, technical subject – sometimes be hard to connect both to wider aims and values, and to a future career? Most university Philosophy courses are concerned mainly either with the Anglo-American tradition of ‘analytic’ philosophy, or with the tradition of ‘European/Continental’ philosophy. In contrast, this new and unique Philosophy degree at Royal Holloway focuses on both traditions and on their connections to each other.
You will learn to connect philosophy to the history which gave rise to it, to analyse philosophical and other arguments, and to think critically about the ways in which philosophers and others have interpreted the world: all so that you’ll be better placed to live in it successfully and perhaps even change it.
