Welcome to the Department of Classics

We’re a vibrant, close-knit and friendly department, and offer both postgraduate taught and research courses that draw on our rich and varied departmental research, allowing us to cover a wide range of the Classical syllabus. Classics is both part of contemporary culture and offers a critical distance from which we can reflect and critically engage with global challenges. We pride ourselves on conducting research engaged with the contemporary world, and our courses are designed to broaden your perspectives, deepen your knowledge and provide you with skills and experience that you can take into your future career or further study.

Our Masters courses offer students the chance to improve their research skills, improve problem-solving ability and work on greater critical analysis. They also allow students to practice presenting on complex areas of research on disciplinary areas of subject-specific research.

As part of the University of London, we have access to world-class research facilities which have contributed to the department’s history of seeing its students through into PhD study. The skills we teach, in developing student’ synthesis and critical understanding, contribute to skillsets highly desired by future employers.
