PhD composer Tom Wilson's article "About about: a songwriter's perspective" has been accepted for publication in issue 2 of Riffs (http://riffsjournal.org/
), a postgraduate journal dedicated to experimental writing on popular music. Tom will be speaking at the journal's launch event, which takes place at Birmingham City University on Wednesday 11th October. His piece considers the contrasting structural imperatives of traditional storytelling and the classic verse/chorus song form, focusing particularly on the way his own lyrics have moved away from straightforward narrative towards a more "musical" logic.
Later in the month, Tom will be releasing his album Tell A Friend - which formed the central part of his PhD portfolio - on the independent label Pickled Egg Records. The album launch takes place at Servant's Jazz Quarters in London on Sunday 22nd October, and features performances from Tom's live band, plus two other Royal Holloway Alumni, Laila Woozeer and Eley Williams.
