The German Society

Like all the student societies in the College, the activities of the German Society are organised by the students, although the staff are always delighted to be involved in them. The vitality of the Society depends on the energy of the students around at a given time, and the German Society has an excellent record of events, theatre trips, films, parties and so on.GermanPlay12

Everyone studying German is entitled to join the Society; membership is also welcome from students of other disciplines with an interest in Germany, Austria and German language and society.

The German Society regularly attracts German-speaking students who are currently studying in other Departments, and so offers good opportunities for personal contacts which will help you improve your spoken German. German is spoken, too, at the society’s weekly Stammtisch, arrangements for which are posted on the Society's noticeboard in the German Department.

For those of you wishing to keep abreast of current German affairs, the International centre offers German Satellite Television 24 hours a day, although if you wish to view German films or documentaries from the comfort of your own room, there is a wide selection of videos and DVDs available totally free of charge. Get in touch with Frank Engelmann to find out how to borrow them. The German Society also offers Film Evenings, which encourage students to improve their listening skills and meet new people from our friendly Department.
