Overview:

IT1000 is an intensive core language course for complete beginners in the Italian language. It comprises a written and an oral component. There are five hours of seminars per week. In these seminars, a communicative approach is adopted and the teaching is carried out in Italian whenever possible.

In the Written component students will study and practise basic linguistic structures and lexicon through a variety of exercises. They will have the opportunity to analyse short articles adapted from Italian newspapers or the internet as well as learn how to plan and write their own views and reflections on them. Grammar is taught in context in accordance with the students’ specific needs as they arise.

In the oral component, students will develop the ability to converse on set topics related to everyday matters. Emphasis will be given to correct pronunciation when they carry out set activities, such as listening comprehension and role play.

By the end of this course, students will have acquired good listening comprehension skills, developed good understanding of basic Italian grammatical structures, familiarized themselves with Italian journalistic writing and gained basic knowledge of Italian traditions and different aspects of Italian life.

Texts, grammar exercises are available on Moodle. Students are required to download, print out and read the material in preparation for all the language classes.

Students will also have access to extensive audio-visual material on Moodle for revision support.
