Overview:
In this course students will be introduced to significant works of German-language "Schauerliteratur" (Gothic fiction) from the Romantic, Realist, and early Modernist periods. Authors to be studied include: Ludwig Tieck, Heinrich von Kleist, Adelbert von Chamisso, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, Jeremias Gotthelf, Theodor Storm and Hugo von Hofmannsthal.
