Examining the forms of television fiction over the 50 year span of surviving material. Emphasis is placed both on popular genres and acknowledged masterpieces, and particular attention is paid to the evolution of television aesthetics and the cultural assumptions about contemporary audiences built into these works. Programmes are drawn from both the UK and the USA, comparing different approaches to the construction of television fiction. Texts examined include Dynasty and NYPD Blue; the War Game and the Singing Detective; Z-Cars and Footballers' Wives.
