Our Media Arts department, led by award-winning world-class experts in the field and practising professionals, is committed to achieving the highest standards in both the study and practice of screen media. The main degree – BA Film, Television and Digital Production (formerly known as BA Media Arts) – is among the few degree programmes in the country that fosters both the critical understanding and creative use of audio-visual media. We give you the opportunity to hone your practical skills using our equipment while backing this up with media theory.
Meanwhile our BA Film Studies allows you to concentrate on the critical and historical analysis of film and television, while our exciting new joint degree in English and Film Studies brings together two internationally-renowned departments.
Access to excellent facilities and equipment
Our Media Arts Centre provides a professional working environment for the development of media practice skills and creativity. You'll have access to a digital television studio, a comprehensive stock of professional location-recording equipment, 12 editing rooms, two media labs and two sound studios. Students are encouraged to use these facilities and equipment throughout their time here to pursue individual projects in addition to those required by their courses.
Working in a supporting atmosphere, you’ll have the opportunity to acquire a deep knowledge of a variety of international film and television cultures while pursuing a focused programme dedicated to exploring a number of creative pathways. We maintain an excellent staff/student ratio and assign personal advisers helping us focus on the intellectual and creative needs of our students.
We pride ourselves on the quality of our research, earning a top 10 score in the last Research Assessment Exercise (2008). More than three-quarters of our research was rated as ‘internationally excellent, while over a quarter was regarded as ‘world-leading’.
With 20 full-time academic staff, we offer specialist PhD supervision in a variety of subjects, including practice-based research. We have experts in the fields of European and World cinema with particular strengths in British and American film and television. Our practice-based programmes benefit from close links with senior figures working in the media and creative industries and courses.
