Dr Rachel Doern
Russian small business survival and growth
Dr Rachel Doern, Lecturer in Entrepreneurship and International Business, was recently invited by The Russian Society at Royal Holloway to give a talk on ‘The experience of Russian entrepreneurs: small business survival and growth’. Dr Doern had this to say about the event:
"I was delighted to have the opportunity to speak to members of the society and all of those individuals with a genuine interest in, and/or knowledge about, the Russian culture and context. The audience was very engaged and we had an excellent discussion about the challenges confronting entrepreneurs in the country. The event was superbly organized by President of the society, Anna Nuzhnaya, who provided our guests with a tour of the campus and formal reception prior to the talk, as well as a less formal social gathering afterwards where the discussion continued. We are very proud of students like Anna who have such a clear mission at the university and passion for their work."
About the Russian Society at Royal Holloway
"The Russian Society was founded in 2006 and today has a membership of nearly 200 people, many of whom continue to participate in community events following their graduation. The society is frequently involved in a diverse range of social gatherings and inter-university activities with other members of the University of London. We strive to maintain strong affiliations with Imperial College, LSE, UCL, King's College, City University, and, most recently, we have started to collaborate with Cambridge University.
"Together with other Russian societies, we hold events aimed at the education trusted space between students from different universities, involving Russian-speakers and those who are genuinely interested in Russian culture. In addition we actively seek to attend the extensive political and economic events held in London and throughout the UK. For example, the society regularly participates in 'Russian Business Week' held by the London School of Economics (LSE). To celebrate the beginning and end of the academic year, we arrange paintballing and go-carting socials with UCL, along with other sporting activities. We also, as a society, attend guest lectures across a broad range of academic fields.
"The Russian Society at Royal Holloway (RHUL) is also involved in inter-university competitions at different levels, such as the English league of KVN (comedy competition), where, among the 12 universities taking part, our team shared first place with LSE. Moreover, at the intellectual student Premier League 'What? Where? When?', a team of RHUL students achieved a respectable fourth place finish amongst the 29 teams taking part. We are proud to carry out productive work on improving the image and reputation of RHUL, as well, we are proud that under the wings of our friendly community, students can feel closer to their home country or at least experience a bit of Russia."
