Economics alumni talk give insight into the world of investment banking, treasury and professional economics

Posted on 29/02/2012

On Tuesday 28 February, nearly forty students attended a careers talk aimed at giving insight into where a degree in Economics can take you.

The three speakers were:

Ed Fisher (Economics, 2007), Investment Banking Director at American Real Estate Partners: After graduating from Royal Holloway, Ed joined Barclays Real Estate, spending four years within its specialist student accommodation and residential housing finance teams. In his current role, he oversees all of its investment activities from initial analysis through to execution.

Alexis Alexandrou (Economics and Mathematics, 2011), Global Corporate and Financial Institutions Treasury Analyst at Bank of America Merrill Lynch: After undertaking an internship at RBS in his second year, Alexis took up his current position after graduating in 2011. Alexis was heavily involved in College life whilst studying and continues to return as an alumni speaker to talk to current students about everything from making applications to what it's like to work at the bank.

Azad Zangana (Economics, 2003), European Economist at Schroders: After graduating from Royal Holloway, Azad completed a Masters degree in Economics at the University of Southampton. He joined Her Majesty's Treasury as an Economist after graduating from the Masters programme, spending three years there before moving into the private sector to work as at Schroders.

Following the speaker presentations, students were given a ten minute workshop with Careers Advisor Andrew Falconer, which equipped them with some handy hints and tips for maximising the opportunities that networking with alumni presents. They were able to put these skills into practice during the reception after the event.

One student commented that 'Events like these are so useful. You get to hear from people what their professions are really all about, what projects they are involved in, and also about how their degrees have helped them get to that position'.
