Accessing e-resources off-campus

If you are on campus, you should be able to access nearly all of our e-resources without logging in. If you want to do the same off-campus, you should use CampusAnywhere the College’s virtual private network, which will simulate on-campus access.

In a minority of cases on campus, and if you are off-campus but not using CampusAnywhere, you may be asked for a login. In this instance you can use your College username and password (which you normally use to access email).

However, if you cannot install CampusAnywhere or are having connection problems, you can use OpenAthens and log in with you Royal Holloway username and password - see notes below.

Note 1 - some of our online resources do not use OpenAthens. For these you have to use CampusAnywhere.

Note 2 - Royal Holloway does not subscribe to all of the resources that use OpenAthens, so you may come across some resources that do not provide you with access when using either OpenAthens or CampusAnywhere. If you are unsure about access to a resource, please email: library@rhul.ac.uk

Use the drop-down guidelines below to work out how to access e-resources off-campus.

I am using LibrarySearch

If you are using CampusAnywhere, just follow the link for any entry which has a yellow star next to it - this indicates that full text online is available. If you are not using CampusAnywhere, once you have carried out your search from the LibrarySearch home page, you will be asked to enter your College username and password.

I am using the library’s E-resources lists

If you are using CampusAnywhere, just follow the links. If you are not using CampusAnywhere, in most cases you will be prompted to enter your username and password. If you don't get a prompt, you could also log in to our library resources with your username and password using OpenAthens.

I am using the library’s Journals A-Z list

If you are using CampusAnywhere, just follow the links. If you are not using CampusAnywhere, you will be asked to enter your College username and password once you have followed a link to a journal from the Journals A-Z list.

I have used an internet search engine to find a resource or article

If you are using CampusAnywhere, you should be able to access any electronic resource which we subscribe to (see section below for instructions on finding out if we subscribe to a particular resource). If you are not using CampusAnywhere, you need to look for an Athens log-in box. We do not use traditional Athens, so even if you find this box you then need to look for a link below this box which will say something like “Alternative log-in”. Click on this link, and you will be prompted to search for your institution, so search for Royal Holloway. Click on Royal Holloway, and you will then be asked if you want to go to the Royal Holloway log-in page. Do this and you will be taken to a log-in page where you need to log in with your College username and password.

How do I know if Royal Holloway provides access to a resource?

If you’re trying to look at an article, you need to know the name of the journal it appears in, and the year the article was published. Use our Journals A-Z list to search for the journal. If it doesn’t appear in this list, you cannot access it via Royal Holloway. If it does, click on the title and a pop-up Find It box will appear, which will present a link to the journal along with information regarding the years available. If you can find both the journal and year you want, just follow the link (ensuring that you have logged in via CampusAnywhere or one of the other methods detailed above). If you’re trying to look at a particular database use the E-resources list to look for the resource, and if it appears on the list you can access it via Royal Holloway.

I’m being told that this is a Senate House, University of London resource

You have to access Senate House e-resources in a different way. If you don’t have a Senate House library card, you will need to use your Royal Holloway College username and password to register for a Senate House number, which you will be asked for (along with your name) whenever you try to access a Senate House e-resource. You will be sent your number by email (if you have a Senate House library card already you will already have a number on your card). Several key resources appear in our E-resources lists. Otherwise you can use our Senate House guides to locate e-journals and databases.

What is Athens/OpenAthens? Do I have a password?

Athens is just a system that allows people to access their own library’s e-resources (e-journals and databases) off-campus. Most e-resources work with Athens, but just because something works with Athens doesn’t mean we subscribe to it! Every University will be able to access a different set of resources via Athens. We don’t have a separate Athens username and password at Royal Holloway – instead we use your College username and password (see the various methods above for using this to access our resources). If you are in doubt about whether you can access an e-resource, use the guidelines above (How do I know if Royal Holloway provides access to a resource?).
