Installing printer drivers

If you wish to print to the multi-function devices (MFDs) across campus you need to first install the required drivers. To do this, connect to CampusNet or CampusAnywhere VPN, then select your Operating System below for instructions.

To install the printer drivers, click on the link below to run the correct program for the operating system you are using:

Print Release software for Windows 32-bit systems

Print Release software for Windows 64-bit systems

The process is relatively straightforward, but here are the full instructions:

  • At the initial download message select Run.

  • If you get a security warning select Run again.

  • if you have tried the wrong download for your system you will get an error message like this (then you can try the other one).

  • Select Install.

  • When the package has been installed then you can select Finish.

  • Two new print queues - B + W and Colour - will then be added to your device, and can then be selected in the Printer dialogue or directly when printing from applications.

  • For each print job authentication will be requested. The job can then be collected by logging in to the print release panel on an MFD for up to 48 hours.

    Note: The Pharos client package will check for updates regularly, so you may receive messages like the one below.

Installer printer queues on Mac OS X


1. Download the installer, which sets up the Pharos Popup utility and the printer queues:

2.  From the Downloads folder open the popup_with_custom_script folder and choose Popup.pkg.

3. At the next screen choose Continue and follow through the PopupInstaller instructions given.  When you are asked for credentials to install the new software use the Administrator account that you use locally on the computer.

4. When the configuration and script packages have run through you will receive a message indicating that the installation was successful.  Click on Close.

5. Select the Apple icon in the top left of the screen, then choose Preferences and Printers and Scanners.  You will now see RHUL Printer B+ W and RHUL Printer Colour in your printer list.

Uninstalling the Pharos Popup software

  • Remove the printer queues from System Preferences
  • Launch the Uninstaller application in </Library/Application Support/Pharos/Utilities>.
  • Select Pharos Popup and any other Pharos components that you would like to uninstall, then click <Continue>.
  • A list of the selected items will be shown. Click <Continue>.
  • Type in an administrator user name and password when required to do so. The selected components will be removed from the client machine.
  • Click <Done> and log out of the client machine.

Notes

The above installation should go through smoothly.  However, if you encounter problems with the Popup installation please bear in mind the following

  • Popup is currently not compatible with the Fast User Switching feature of Mac OS X. Always disable Fast User Switching when installing Popup on a client machine.
  • If a firewall is present between the client machine and the Pharos Popup and LPD Servers, the following ports must be opened for traffic for Popup to work properly:

    Port 515
    Port 28203

To check which version of the Mac operating system you have go to the Apple icon at the top left of the screen and select "about this mac"

Overview

  • Log in as an administrator and run the Popup installer to install the Popup client on your Mac OS X computer.
  • Use the Mac OS X Print Centre or Printer Setup Utility applications to add Popup printer queues.

Installation and Printer Configuration

  • Click on the Popup installer (popup.zip) and run it:
  • Double-click the Popup.dmg file to create a new disk image in Finder. This disk contains the Popup 8.0 installer, Popup.pkg.
  • Double-click the installer to run it.

  • Select a destination disk. You will only be able to select the startup disk.
  • Click Install (or Upgrade). You will be requested to authenticate yourself as an administrator. (at a prompt asking you to type in your password to allow the installer to make changes)
  • The installer automatically installs Popup 8.0 and required support files.
  • Pharos Popup will now be running on the computer and will be automatically launched every time a user logs in.

Configuring printers

  • Open System Preferences and click on the Print & Fax icon.
  • Click the + button.
  • Hold down the Control key on the keyboard and click anywhere on the toolbar. From the popup menu that appears, select Customize Toolbar....
  • Drag the Advanced icon to the toolbar and close the customization dialog.
  • Click on the Advanced button in the toolbar.
  • From the Type popup button, select Pharos Print Server.
  • In the URL field, enter the Unified Resource Identifier for the desired Popup queue on a Pharos Print Server. This value should be one of the followin:

  popup://rhulprint/B+W
  popup://rhulprint/Colour

  • In the Name field, enter a name for the new printer queue. This is the name that will be shown to users on the machine.
  • From the Print Using popup button, select the type of printer associated with the Popup queue. If the desired printer is not available, selecting "Generic PostScript Printer" will work in most cases.
  • Click Add.   An "Installable Options, uniprint01" dialogue box will now appear. 
  • Click on the square to tick the box for "Duplex Printing Unit" and then click "Continue".
  • The new Popup queue will now show up in the list of printers.
  • Once all the required printers have been added click the lock to prevent further changes (bottom left).

To print to a new queue, select it from the printer popup button in the print dialog of any application.

  • Open Printer Setup Utility in /Applications/Utilities/ or System Preferences and click on the Print & Fax icon
  • Click the Add button in the toolbar, then hold down the Option key on the keyboard and click the More Printers.. button.
  • From the topmost popup button, select Advanced.
  • From the Device popup button, select Pharos Print Server.
  • In the Device Name field, enter a name for the new printer queue.
  • In the Device URI field, enter the Unified Resource Identifier for the desired Popup queue on a Pharos Print Server. This value should be one of the following:

           popup://rhulprint/B+W
           popup://rhulprint/Colour

  • From the Printer Model popup button, select the type of printer associated with the Popup queue. If the desired printer is not available, selecting "Generic" will work in most cases.
  • Click Add. The new Popup queue will now show up in the list of printers.

To print to the new queue, select it from the printer popup button in the print dialog of any application.
