Attachments - Is it safe to open email attachments even though I have anti-virus software installed?

Question:
Attachments - Is it safe to open email attachments even though I have anti-virus software installed?
Answer:

Even with the most up-to-date anti-virus software installed on a computer there is is no guarantee that all viruses will be detected.

In general you should not open messages, especially ones with attachments, from people or mail accounts you do not know or recognise. Also, be wary of messages that appear to be from someone you know but that are unexpected or unusual.

The safest course of action if you receive anything unexpected is to delete it.
