How to Apply

You can either apply by downloading an application form or applying online. Please visit the following page to find out details on how to apply for our PhD Research Programme. Please do not apply directly to the department.

We encourage candidates to visit the ISG Staff Directory, before submitting their applications, to obtain more information about the research interests of ISG members of staff, and to potentially contact prospective supervisors to discuss research ideas for your PhD studies. Decision regarding potential supervisors should be based on how well the research interests of members of staff fit to your own interests. We suggest that candidates spend time looking at individual members of staff research interests, and contact only those who they think could be a potential supervisor in their area of interest.

Whether you apply in writing, or online, the following four pieces of information should ideally be included in your application (these can be covered in sections labeled Research Proposal, Supporting Statement or indeed in some combined attachment):

  1. An explanation as to why you wish to pursue PhD research in Information Security.
  2. A personal statement that explains why you think your would fit into our research group.
  3. An indication of the research areas that most interest you, and why they interest you (you do not have to formally define a full research project, although you are welcome to do so).
  4. An indication of which staff you think might make potential supervisors. It is useful, but not essential, to have contacted potential staff in advance.

The main goal of this section is to assist us processing your application, by learning your research interests, background, experience, career goals, and ultimately help us to identify potential supervisors.

Once we receive your application we will circulate it amongst potential supervisors. We will contact you as soon as a decision is made. In certain circumstances we may wish to contact you to request further information or invite you to visit the department.

Please note that an offer is dependent on a supervisor being available to support your PhD research study. Occasionally qualified candidates may be turned down simply because we do not have available supervision.

Students who require a visa to study in the UK may find visa application advice on the International Student Support web pages.
