A new network of European research centres focusing on cryptography will be launched this spring, with more than 20 partners from 15 countries. The COST Action "Cryptography for Secure Digital Interaction" will bring together European experts working in different sub-areas of cryptography (e.g. symmetric cryptography, public-key cryptography, protocol design and analysis), to stimulate cooperation between the different national efforts for developing and analysing cryptographic solutions for secure digital interaction between citizens. Similarly to other recent European-wide research networks in cryptography (ECRYPT and ECRYPT II),Royal Holloway is one of the main partners in this new COST Action.
COST - European Cooperation in Science and Technology -is an intergovernmental framework aimed at facilitating the collaboration and networking of scientists and researchers at European level. COST activities are arranged in the form research networks ("COST Actions"), and include the organisation of training schools, workshops and sponsoring of academic visits among partners. Cryptography plays an indisputable key role in securing digital interactions in the modern world. Europe has many excellent research groups in cryptography, but the inevitable specialisation of researchers can often lead to fragmentation of research efforts within the continent. This COST Action aims to address this issue, by facilitating the cooperation among European researchers working in cryptography.
Dr Carlos Cid is one of the UK representatives in the COST Action Management Committee, and will work to stimulate participation of UK-based researchers in cryptography in the research network.Particular focus will be on PhD students and post-doctoral researchers. Besides organisation of schools and workshops, the COST Action also facilitates exchange of researchers among the participating institutions; it is widely recognised that all these activities can be extremely valuable for early-career researchers. Overall, we expect ISG researchers and students working in cryptography to greatly benefit from our involvement in this new COST Action.
The COST Action "Cryptography for Secure Digital Interaction" will officially start in March 2014, and will last for four years. The first activities are expected to be held towards the autumn. For more information see the Action Page.
