Working with Departments

A key goal of the Directorate is to work closely with colleagues in both academic departments and professional services in order to improve student recruitment, to support the development of institutional partnerships so as to enhance the experience of our students as well as Royal Holloway’s reputation, and to deliver an excellent service in the admission of our students.

Some of the ways in which we currently work with academic and professional service departments are set out below and we welcome any ideas on how we can develop these further.

Student Recruitment

Targeted UG recruitment & outreach activities in the UK/EU

  • Visits to schools to deliver academic 'taster lectures' or department specific workshops targeting all groups of prospective students (HEU and overseas in the UK)
  • Department specific on-campus events, for example Sixth Form Lecture Series, Science Festival and bespoke visits for schools
  • Department specific sessions in activities for teachers, advisors and key stakeholders, such as the annual Teachers & Advisors Conference
  • Specific department initiatives for individual from non-traditional backgrounds in line with Royal Holloway's OFFA agreement
  • Providing advice and support to departments in targeting school activities in terms of selecting target schools and the provision of appropriate activities/presentations

Targeted PG recruitment activities in the UK/EU

  • Coordination of 'Royal Holloway in central London' postgraduate lecture series, offering slots to individual departments
  • Organisation of 1-2-1 and group meetings with enquirers for a specific department in target European countries where academic colleague is travelling to the country
  • Joint central/departmental visits to European countries, including attendance at relevant exhibitions, bespoke events, institutional visits and meetings with enquirers and applicants

Overseas student recruitment

  • Joint central/departmental visits to overseas target markets, including attendance at relevant exhibitions, bespoke events, institutional visits and meetings with enquirers and applicants*
  • Department specific training to Royal Holloway's network of education agents
  • Department specific sessions at Royal Holloway's biannual Agent Conference
  • Coordination of guest lectures at overseas HE institutions to raise a department's profile
  • Support with existing inward visits from overseas taking place within a department
  • Coordination of specific visits to UK schools with high proportions of international students and international specific foundation providers
  • Support with the arrangement of additional recruitment activities where academic staff are planning to visit an overseas target market*
  • Support in the development of relationships with overseas scholarship bodies

* in these cases the Directorate of Student Recruitment & Partnerships may be able to part fund activities up to a maximum of 50%

Online student recruitment

  • Online presentations (webinars) targeted at undergraduate and postgraduate enquirers, for example, providing an academic taster lecture
  • Attendance at targeted virtual recruitment exhibitions
  • Coordination, together with Comms & ER, of department specific enquirer communications, making use of extensive enquirer data
  • Targeted departmental newsletters to stakeholder (eg British Council) mailbases

Supporting new course development

  • Collation of 'unmet needs' (popular subject areas/course titles in demand at exhibitions) by department
  • Collation of feedback on course proposals from key stakeholders, such as schools in the UK and overseas and education agents, including course structure, entry requirements and course title

Conversion of applicants

Offline conversion initiatives

  • Advice on Applicant Visit Day programmes and provision of a personalised experience and information/presentations as part of the day
  • Coordination of a central programme for individual visitors to departments (usually those who cannot make an Applicant Visit Day)
  • Inclusion of departments in central campus based conversion initiatives, including careers workshops for applicants
  • Organisation of 1-2-1 and group meetings with applicants for a specific department in target markets where academic colleague planning to travel
  • Conversion visits to target schools and foundation providers to enhance relationship with academic department and conversion of applicants at that institution
