Appointment of Head of the School of Modern Languages

Posted on 07/11/2012

Dr Jon Hughes has been appointed as Head of the School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures with effect from January 2013.

Jon joined the College in 2003 as a lecturer in German and has played a strong role in the life of the School and Faculty since then. He has held positions as Director of Research, chaired the School’s post-graduate sub-board and convened the minor degree in Film Studies (now called International Film) for the School. From 2009-2011 he served as Deputy Dean for Research in the Faculty of Arts, developing, in conjunction with the Dean, the ‘On Track’ researcher training programme which has subsequently been adopted College-wide.

Jon has research interests in modern and contemporary German and Austrian culture, and in particular that of the interwar period (1918-1939). He has published on the writing of Joseph Roth, has been guest editor and reviews editor of Austrian Studies and has most recently written on Austrian mountaineering.

I am sure colleagues will join me in congratulating Jon on his new appointment.
