Inspiring career paths in finance

Posted on 06/11/2012

Over 500 students benefited from the first Careers in Finance Week organised by the Careers Service. This was the first of six themed weeks designed to reflect the diversity of career aspirations of current students.

Careers in Finance Week was designed to showcase a wide variety of career options in the financial services sector. Students participated in lectures and discussions about Investment Banking, Corporate Law, Risk & Insurance, Professional Services, Accountancy and Financial Journalism.  Through alumni and other professionals, students heard from companies including Deutsche Bank, Bank of England, PWC, Deloitte, Shell International, Citigroup, ICAEW, Allianz and Barclays Capital. Events were supported by academic staff chairing sessions, and student societies engaging with employers and alumni.

Feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive with one survey response saying:

“It was a fantastic opportunity to get inside information from former students at Royal Holloway. It was the best possible way to inform future students and people with a keen interest in the subject.”

Students unable to access the campus were able to follow live-blogs, tweets and video streaming.

Head of Careers, Elizabeth Wilkinson, commented:

“This is a radical departure from the way we have delivered employer events in the past. The energy and enthusiasm from both students and employers has been palpable. The stories and encouragement from our successful alumni clearly inspired the student audience.

We wanted to show students that the financial services sector has many professional options and that students from any academic discipline can forge a successful career in it. I am delighted to have seen so many students from a wide range of departments including History, Classics, English and Physics join those from Economics and Management in attending these events.”

Other themed weeks to look forward to include International; Numbers, Words & Environment (STEM), Not for Profit Careers WeekDiversity Week, and Creative Careers.
