Former Professor of Classics appointed Member of the Order of Merit

Dr Martin Litchfield West has been appointed a Member of the Order of Merit in the Queen’s New Year Honours.

Dr West is an internationally recognised scholar in classics, classical antiquity and philology. He was Professor of Greek at Bedford College from 1974 and then at Royal Holloway and Bedford New College until 1991. He then held the position of Senior Research Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford from 1991 to 2004, before being made an Emeritus Fellow at the same college.

In 2000, he was awarded the Balzan Prize for Classical Antiquity. In 2002, he was awarded the Kenyon Medal for Classical Studies from the British Academy. Upon receipt of the Kenyon medal, he was called “the most brilliant and productive Greek scholar of his generation”. A prolific scholar, he has written on topics including ancient Greek music, tragedy and lyric poetry.

Previous recipients of the Order of Merit include Sir Andrew Huxley OM, a Visitor to the College from 1986 – 1992 and Honorary Fellow, and Lord Solly Zuckeman OM, a Visitor at Bedford College from 1968 – 1985, also an Honorary Fellow of the College.
