A one day conference on 12 July at the Institute of Physics will showcase the collaborative work that Royal Holloway has been undertaking with universities and other organisations to identify and support career progress needs for students with disabilities in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields of study.
Royal Holloway is a founder member of the STEM Disability Transition Group| which works to improve information, advice and guidance for disabled students wishing to further progress in STEM fields.The overarching aim is to facilitate greater numbers of young people with disabilities developing STEM skills and working in STEM industries.
The group was instigated upon the findings and aspirations of attendees at the HE STEM Conference held here last year. At that conference, delegates representing higher and further education colleges and professional bodies expressed a strong desire for cross-STEM discussions to continue to enable transfer of practice to occur between colleagues and practitioners working in this area.
The July conference will communicate the work we have been doing to address the major challenges faced in transitioning within education and to employment. The programme will feature guest speakers representing the three key transition phases: from school/college to higher education, within higher education and from higher education to employment. as well as students, disability practitioners and employers sharing their experiences of progression from STEM education to employment.
Members of the STEM Disability Transition Group have been collecting data from students regarding their expectations and experiences of STEM study in secondary and higher education and delegates will participate in conference workshops to discuss the findings and to explore the implications for employment.
