Boilerhouse 1 Teaching Facility Project almost complete

Posted on 10/10/2013

We are pleased to announce that, from Monday 14 October, the repurposed Boilerhouse 1 will open as the newest teaching facility on campus. This project is the culmination of three months of intense work over the summer vacation.

Boilerhouse 1 and 2 used to provide heating and power for the Founder’s Building when Royal Holloway first opened as a women’s college in 1886. Repurposing areas such as these requires sensitive restoration that ensures any changes are in keeping with the original architecture.

The new lecture theatre will provide much needed multi-purpose teaching space, as well as an additional performance area for use by our students. While the lecture theatre is ready, there will be a period of three weeks in which builders will be working overnight and weekends to put the finishing touches to the project. This includes installing toilets, completing the entrance and exit points and permanent AV equipment.

During this time, staff and students are advised to use facilities in the International Building. There will be an official opening ceremony in due course.
