I teach early modern history and am director of the MA Public History

I have been here for 3 and a half years
What did you do before joining the College?
I was teaching and writing in Cambridge.
Where were you born?
Born in Bromley, Kent but grew up in Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire.
Where do you live?
I live in Cambridge - just a cycle ride from one of the best libraries in the world.
What do you do to unwind?
I find it hard to properly unwind – sleep is the best way but beyond that gym, cooking, reading and cinema.
Where are you happiest?
Italian café on a sunny day with a good coffee and a good book or in bed with the Sunday papers.
What is your favourite film?
I don’t have a favourite – different things move me at different times. I am dreadful at remembering plots but for me a good film leaves you thinking or feeling something afterwards.
What’s the best part of your job here?
Interaction with students is fantastic – I love teaching and spending time with young people. It is great when students work hard and are enthusiastic. I am lucky to be involved with the MA Public History so also work with a number of external institutions as well as students. It is also of course brilliant that part of the job is writing and research and that the department is also very supportive of my activities in the media.
