Press Release - Royal Holloway International Scholarships Reception 2014
On Wednesday 19th February the Principal, Professor Paul Layzell, hosted the annual International Scholarships Reception to celebrate the achievements of Royal Holloway’s undergraduate and postgraduate international scholarship recipients. The event was attended by over 100 guests and held in the Picture Gallery in the beautiful Founder’s Building on Royal Holloway’s campus in Egham, Surrey.
The Reception is organised by the Directorate of Student Recruitment & Partnerships and aims to raise awareness of the contribution our international scholars make to the wider college community. The event also provides an opportunity for scholars to meet fellow students from different academic departments and to network with academic and professional staff.
Sheryl Simon, Director of Student Recruitment & Partnerships, said that “Our international scholars contribute significantly to the academic life of Royal Holloway, and the positive impact they go on to make to their own societies post-graduation, is most impressive”.
In addition to those holding a scholarship from Royal Holloway, a number of scholars in receipt of funding from external international organisations also attended. These organisations ranged from large multi-national funding bodies such as Santander, Chevening and the Commonwealth Commission, to smaller country-specific funding bodies such as the Turkish Embassy and the Thai Government Students Office.
The scholars present at the event spoke about how the scholarship has helped them to achieve their aspirations of studying in the UK. Amritha Sharath, an MBA International Management student from India, explained, “Winning the scholarship filled me with more confidence in my decision to do my MBA. It was a particularly tough decision to make, since my company was very keen on offering me a promotion to work in our headquarters in our London office, but I finally chose Royal Holloway. The fact that the University was ready to invest in me made me want to excel at my course.”
Music was provided by current PhD Music student, Yuiko Asaba, and her band as they played some light jazz to create an enjoyable and relaxed ambience.
As the event drew to a close the Principal, Professor Paul Layzell, expressed his appreciation for the external funding providers who help to support talented students to study at Royal Holloway and wished the scholars the best for completing their studies and their subsequent career paths.
