Academic probation advisers

This workshop will cover best practice for academic probation advisers and introduce the College guidance on probation supervision, including teaching and learning via the Education Development team. It will also include the sharing of best practice from current advisers.

AHRC TECHNE – making the most of the selection process

This event will offer guidance on the 2017 TECHNE application process and advice on how to maximise the chances of student success. It is aimed at Directors of Graduate Studies, Postgraduate Administrators and any academic in the arts and humanities who is interested in putting forward a doctoral student for an AHRC TECHNE DTP (www.techne.ac.uk ) scholarship. The workshop will be led by Dr Ruth Livesey, the TECHNE Deputy Director, and Jane Gawthrope, the TECHNE Manager. This is a great opportunity to understand how the selection process works, and how best to support your students through it.

Research Impact

Research impact is about making your work useful to people, organisations and society at large. It comes in many forms and is quickly becoming a major part of the academic landscape, including growing requirements on impact from research funders and the UK government. These events will equip you with the knowledge and tools to develop the impact of your research outside academia. They're suitable for academics at any stage of their career, whether you're looking for a refresher or are new to the topic.

Academic promotion

Two workshops for those considering applying for academic promotion. The sessions will look at the way the application process proceeds, criteria for promotion and material that needs to be prepared.

Managing your research publications and data

These sessions will provide an overview of the college systems and services for research publications and data. They will provide an overview of Open Access and research data management including HEFCE and funder's requirements and give advice and practical support on how to meet them and raise the profile of your research.

e-Learning support

A set of resources for staff who are interested in realising the benefits of learning technologies in the delivery, assessment, and administration of their courses. e-Learning can be described as learning activities facilitated and supported through the use of a broad range of information and communication technologies. Such technologies include Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs), online submission tools, e-assessment services, audience voting/participation systems (Clickers), and social networking tools (blogging, microblogging, social bookmarking).

Educational development

Educational Development provides guidance on curriculum development, and offers professional development activities for all teaching staff at Royal Holloway. These include the CAPITAL (Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice in Teaching and Learning) and inSTIL (developing the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively support student learning in HE) programmes, which are accredited with the Higher Education academy.

Research support

Library Services offer a number of support services to researchers, covering open access, research data, copyright and other resources, including Pure, the College's research information system, which can be used by researchers to create an online profile and record their publications, projects and research activities.

Impact through publication

This online tutorial is aimed at postgraduate research students and staff across all disciplines, and comprises of three modules: introduction to bibliometrics, track your research impact, and journal ranking and analysis.

TaLIG

The College has its own Teaching and Learning Interest Group (TaLIG) which is open to all staff with teaching / support of learning responsibilities. TaLIG events are held on a regular basis to disseminate and share ideas about effective teaching practices; both internal and external speakers are invited to discuss innovative practices and central themes of key pedagogic interest (e.g. assessment and feedback; inclusive teaching approaches; technology enhanced learning).
