Description

What is it?

This session will walk you through the best ways of engaging law and policy-makers with your research. It will give you the “know how” and help you use your time efficiently when doing so. Our speakers are:

  • Kate Anderson from UK Parliament’s Universities office will give an overview of how Parliament works and how academic researchers can inform its activities, including through Select Committees, All Party Parliamentary Groups, Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology, and House of Commons and Lords Libraries.
  • Juliane Wesemann from Department for Education will discuss Government’s use of research evidence and tips for academics looking to work with government and civil servants. Juliane has wide ranging experience at Department for Education as well as in local authorities, Treasury and Cabinet Office.
  • Prof Jonathan Wadsworth from Royal Holloway’s Economics Department will share his experience of directly shaping government policy on labour migration through key policy recommendations made by the Home Office sponsored Migration Advisory Committee of which Prof Wadsworth was member. This work became a strong impact case study in REF 2014.
  • Dr Alice Milner from Royal Holloway’s Geography Department will offer a perspective from her time as research expert embedded in Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) where she worked closely with policy makers, and her work on improving the robustness of Government decision-making and the role of academic research in that process.

Target audience
