What is it?
An introduction to the essentials of effective leadership and management for those new to the role.
Is it right for you?
- Have you recently taken on a role with management and leadership responsibilities?
- Would you like the opportunity to think about how well you are approaching your new remit?
- Would you appreciate some tools and techniques to help you adapt to this role more quickly?
- Would you like to know how to manage former peers appropriately?
- Are you finding it difficult to let go of your old job and delegate to others?
What will you get out of it?
This workshop will give you:
- An understanding of how the similarities and differences between various definitions of leadership and management can help you to have greater clarity about what is expected of you in your roles, responsibilities and working relationships.
- The ability and confidence to honestly evaluate your default leadership style, recognise your strengths and identify your areas for personal development or support, so that you can continue to develop as a leader.
- A practical understanding the competing priorities of management so that you can effectively monitor the attention you need to give to the task, the team and the individual through changing circumstances.
- A range of motivational tools and techniques to build and maintain teams, and achieve high levels of commitment and productivity.
- An understanding of the principles and techniques of effective delegation, and tips for overcoming common delegation pitfalls.
What will it involve?
This is a one-day, interactive workshop designed to provide an opportunity to take stock of your development as a leader and manager, and to help you to hone your leadership abilities even further.
We will look at how you learn to become a leader and help you to identify the best approaches for acquiring the extra skills and knowledge you need for ongoing success.
Using John Adair’s Action Centred Leadership model, we will explore the various responsibilities of a manager and help you to evaluate your levels of ability and the priority you give to each area.
We will examine practical techniques and ideas that you can use to improve your ability to set goals, motive people, build productive teams and delegate effectively.
The workshop will be a mix of teaching, discussion, small group activities and individual reflection. During the workshop you will have an opportunity to share your own experiences of the challenges of adapting to a management role and to receive support and advice from the trainer and your fellow participants.
How should you prepare?
To get the most out of the workshop please:
- think about what lessons you have already learnt about leadership and management in your new role and be prepared to share your insights with others
- think about the things you have found most challenging in your new role and be prepared to discuss specific examples
