Summer Institute Fellows with Holocaust survivor Kitty Hart-Moxon (bottom row, centre)
The Summer Institute on the Holocaust and Jewish Civilisation 2016 took place on our Egham campus between 4 - 13 July.
18 Fellows were chosen from over 50 applications to take part in the 10-day residential course that involves an intensive timetable of seminars and lectures in subjects such as Jewish history, Holocaust history, Holocaust literature and Holocaust film. We were particularly delighted to have Dr David Silberklang as part of our teaching staff; Dr Silberklang travelled to the Institute from Yad Vashem to teach Jewish history, a module previously taught by the late Professor David Cesarani.
This year, Fellows heard from guest speakers such as Sarah Helm (author of If This is a Woman
); Philippe Sands (lawyer, author of East West Street
); Dr Becky Jinks (Royal Holloway); Suzanne Bardgett and James Bulgin (Imperial War Museum); and Holocaust survivor Kitty Hart-Moxon. Weekend excursions were also made to Bevis Marks Synagogue, the Imperial War Museum and the Jewish Museum.
The Holocaust Research Centre would like to thank the Holocaust Educational Foundation at Northwestern University, USA, The Pears Foundation and Yad Vashem UK Foundation, without whose support the Institute would not have been possible. We would also like to thank all of our guest speakers, lecturers and administrative staff, and we look forward to hosting the next Summer Institute in 2018.
