Yuko Misu, a Year 3 PhD student in the Politics, Development and Sustainability (PDS) group has been awarded a prestigious Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) UK Postgraduate Study Tour Award. Yuko will use the funding to conduct research on JICA's One Village One Product (OVOP) project in Malawi. This project seeks to encourage economic self-reliance in rural areas through intiating small business opportunities for farmers.

The JICA-funded research will complement Yuko's ongoing PhD research on approaches to self-help in rural Malawi. She is using interviews, participatory diagramming and focus groups in a number of villages to examine indigenous concepts of self-help and how these match or contrast with those used by non-governmental organisations (NGOS) working in the area.
